Four children were exposed to mercury Wednesday at a Lenoir elementary school, officials said.
Students at Whitnel Elementary School on Hibriten Drive were evacuated from the school after the mercury exposure.
Officials said a child brought a vial of mercury to the school and it spilled on the floor of a fifth-grade classroom shortly before 11 a.m., officials said. The amount that spilled was roughly the size of a dime, according to officials.
Four children were exposed. They were decontaminated and then taken to an area hospital for observation.
Fifteen other students were in the classroom when the spill happened. Officials said those students will be held in the school until Environmental Protection Agency officials arrive at the school.
The parents of those students are allowed to be with them while they wait, they just can't leave school property until they are cleared, officials said.
The rest of the students at the school are being taken to Whitnel Central Baptist, about a mile away, where they can be picked up by their parents.
Firefighters in protective clothing are going into the school to clean up the spill.
It's unclear how the child got the mercury.
